[ Sprettsa’tu:ra ] Origin: Italian
I’m sure a lot of you are wondering what in the world this word means. This word first made its appearance in “The Book of the Courtier” by Baldassare Castiglione. He describes this term as ‘a certain nonchalance, so as to conceal all art and make whatever one does or says appear to be without effort and almost without any thought about it’.
I’ve often been asked what inspires my sense of style and the answer is never really the same. On one day I’ll claim that my choices are impulsive and on another I’d convince you that they’re somewhat of an inheritance.
In one of my attempts to build my knowledge of men’s style I stumbled upon a word that would, to a large degree, encapsulate my many personalities of personal style… SPREZZATURA!!
Guys, this word has literally aligned the relation I have to my personal style and the effect it has on my way of living. To put it simply, Sprezzatura refers to the art of seeming effortless and unaware of your demeanour (both in your attitude and appearance). While I won’t admit to obsessing over the opinions of others regarding my style, I will admit to trying to portray a certain ease and nonchalance to my appearance.
Whether it’s my unkempt beard or my cuffed jeans, I believe the art of sprezzatura helped shape my style into what it is today and will most certainly play a role in developing what it will be in the future.
What word would YOU use to describe your style sensibilities?
